JAPAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY LAUNCHES JAPAN’S SHIPMENT AND TRADE EFFICIENCY ASSESSMENT

October 02, 2015

On October 2, 2015, the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI), representing a network of approximately 1.3 million Japanese businesses, met with GCEL in Tokyo to launch the Japan Shipment and Trade Efficiency Assessment (SEA).

The initiative was designed to identify the digital tools needed to strengthen Japan’s trade competitiveness, improve export performance, and enhance connections with international markets. As the world’s third-largest economy, Japan has faced challenges including modest economic growth, an aging population, and slower domestic demand.

Discussions highlighted the importance of improving trade efficiency and expanding trade relationships with middle- and low-income countries, where trade costs remain significantly higher than in high-income economies.

The adoption of advanced digital tools can increase transparency, reduce trade costs, improve access to finance, and encourage investment, helping to strengthen purchasing power and create new export opportunities for high-value goods and services.

The assessment projected that the deployment of these digital solutions could reduce Japan’s trade costs by USD 43.81 billion and increase trade by USD 32.31 billion.
