CANADIAN OFFICIALS EMBRACE THE DIGITAL ECONOMY WITH COMPLETION OF CANADA SEA REPORT

March 08, 2018

The Canada Shipment and Trade Efficiency Assessment (SEA) was finalized during a review session held at Global Affairs Canada in Ottawa on March 8, 2018, bringing together representatives from government, transportation, logistics, trade, and research organizations.

Participants included Global Affairs Canada, Canada Border Services Agency, CN Rail, Canadian Pacific Railway, UPS, the Canadian International Freight Forwarders Association, the Canadian Transportation Research Forum, the International Chamber of Commerce, and other leading industry stakeholders.

Mr. Don Johnston, former Secretary General of the OECD (1996–2006) and a member of GCEL’s Americas Advisory Board, described the Canada SEA Report as an important step in assessing Canada’s trade efficiency and identifying how digital tools can reduce costs and strengthen global competitiveness.

The report concluded that digitizing Canada’s global value chains could reduce excess domestic and international trade costs by USD 46.5 billion, increase trade by USD 104 billion, and create nearly one million new jobs.
